Extraordinary
Recently I heard one of my relatively new and favorite worship songs that brought back a very pleasant memory; it's a song by a young man name Kelontae Gavin, titled, "No Ordinary Worship." When I first heard the song in 2019 it was during a time I needed to be reminded that the God I serve is not ordinary, it wasn't that anything out of the ordinary was happening in my life, however, I felt as though I was just going through the motions, nothing great happening, nothing bad happening, everything was just, "ordinary." I remember being in my car driving to work on a beautiful sun drenched morning with my gospel music playing as I crept through the bumper to bumper traffic. It was my custom to turn on the radio immediately when I got into the car and keep it on for the forty-five minute drive to work. As this particular song began to play, I immediately realized that the station had gone new on me, because I wasn't expecting this song. Coming through the radio interrupting my ordinary and ritualistic praise was a strong, confident voice, not shouting, but rather stating emphatically, "THIS AINT NO ORDINARY WORSHIP." by the end of the song, uncontrollable, salty tears were streaming down my face, I could barely see the cars in front of me, so I decided to pull over and get myself together before endangering myself or anyone else for that matter. I pulled into an empty parking lot and sat there just thanking God for His love and mercy. After I regained my composure, I pulled out my cellphone try and find that song, I needed to hear it again. A short google search later and I had it on youtube. By the time I made it to work, I knew all the lyrics to the song. The song is short and pretty elementary in content, but it was exactly what I needed in that moment to break what I perceived was a very ordinary time in my relationship with God. Let me share the lyrics to the song:
This ain’t no ordinary worship
This ain’t no ordinary song
The God I serve is greater than the ordinary
So I’m going to give it all I have in this moment
Let me tell the story about a woman with an issue
Had it 12 long years, didn’t know what to do
She heard about a man coming through her town
She fell to her knees and crawled on the ground
She said If I could only touch the hem of his garment
I’m gonna give it all I have in this moment
Let me tell a story about a man from Galilee
He healed the lame, caused the blind to see
This man was betrayed, crucified for you and me
This man only wanted to make us free
Oh, yes, He did, Oh, yes, He did
But in three days he rose with all power
Three days he rose with all power
Three days he rose with all power
Yeah, yeah, yeah!
I’m gonna give it all I have
I’m gonna give it all I have
I’m gonna give it all I have
In this moment
Some folk may say there is nothing wrong with having an ordinary relationship with God, and I will agree with that to a certain point, however we can never forget that the God we serve is not ordinary, He doesn't change to fit into our box of us four and no more. I heard a preacher once say, "I read somewhere, that He healed the sick, I read somewhere, that he caused the blind to see, I read somewhere, that He is a Wonderful Counselor and the Prince of Peace, I read somewhere, that after three days in the grave he rose with all power in His hand." No we don't serve an ordinary God, as such, our worship should not be ordinary. If you are feeling like life is just ordinary, that your relationship with God seems distant, then I encourage you look back over your life and exam where you have come from, you may have a ways to go yet, but you aren't where you used to be. Let's try to always remember that our extraordinary God, the one who created the heaven's and the earth, the God that created us in His image; know's exactly what we need, when we need it. Let's prepare ourselves through prayer, praise and study to be ready to receive when God places what we need in our laps, then give Him all you have in that moment and forevermore.
Much Love
Melissa
