Recharge
Recently I spent all day with my fifteen year old at a Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Robotics competition kickoff at the
Space and Rocket Center. Hundreds of
kids were there representing high schools all over the area. As we gathered in
the auditorium to get instructions for this year’s competition I was delighted
to see the energy and enthusiasm the kids exhibited. They were geared up with excitement and
hanging on every word the presenters uttered.
The kickoff was titled, “Recharge,”
I don’t know exactly why, but I thought it an appropriate title, since
this competition only happens once a year and it requires a lot of time and
talent.
After the presentations at the Space and Rocket Center,
which took half a day, we parents herded the kids in our cars and drove them to
a local STEM meeting room, where they spent the other half of the day going
over their game plan. I sat in on some
of this meeting but unfortunately I had to leave due to the fact the all the
numbers they were throwing out caused me to have a massive headache.
I decided to sit in my car and wait for the meeting to end. Three hours later, while in the middle of my second Netflix
movie on my mobile phone I was startled
by the sound of a door slamming shut, I
looked up to see the kids, seemingly in no hurry, walking towards the parking lot. None of the kids seemed to have that burst of
energy that they had earlier that morning, they weren’t talking, nor jumping
around, and shockingly no one had their mobile phones out that I could
see. When my son got into the car, I
asked him why everyone looked so down.
He replied, mom it has been a long day, folk started tuning the speaker
out, laying their heads on the tables and playing games on their mobile phones,
I’m just tired, are we going home? I
chuckled when he said this, because I am always stopping to pick something up
or dropping something off when he’s in the car with me. This child just wanted to go home to rest, he
was mentally exhausted he really needed a recharge.
Titus 3:4-6 New King James Version (NKJV)
But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward
man appeared, not by works of
righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us,
through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through
Jesus Christ our Savior,
Have you ever sat through a long sermon, or one that you
just was not feeling, but you sat through it anyway because you didn’t want to
be rude and leave. I have, and truth be
told I did not have my mind on the sermon after a while; I was simply ready to
go. If I did not leave physically, I had
left mentally and waiting for the sermon to end became a burden that left me
exhausted. It took me sitting through a
couple of those type sermons before I realized that I had to do something when
I left Church or my spirit would be vexed the rest of the day and I wouldn't be as pleasant as I normally was.
After recognizing this spirit and praying about it for some time, I finally realized that my sitting through the sermon wasn’t
about me only. God’s Word was being preached,
surely I could find something in it that I could apply to my life or pass on to someone who I may encounter who needed to be recharged. Now I will sit through, and listen to any sermon, whether the preacher is monotone, screaming, lecturing or a comedian, because I know the importance of being recharged by God's Word.
I shared this vital lesson with my Son and I read this scripture to him: Romans 10:14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? Then I said, you need to understand something son, how can you learn if the teacher doesn't teach. You need to pray about your inability to listen and find something to learn.
I don't know whether my son truly got the analogy, but I pray for anyone today that needs a spiritual recharge to continue on your journey no matter what obstacles you may face. Recognize those things that hinder you from hearing and learning Gods Word, because I guarantee you will need to fall back on those words to recharge again and again.
