Batman
One afternoon after picking up my grand
boys from daycare I decided to treat them to a trip to one of their
favorite toy stores (ages three and four at the time). They both were
into what they called, "Powers," meaning superhero's such as
Spiderman, Flash, etc. As we were driving along, I decided to see how
much they knew about superhero’s. I began
to ask them a litany of questions about their favorite "Power's." I
asked them what each Power’s strength was and to add a little more excitement,
I asked them, who could beat up who.
With ease, they rattled off attributes
associated with their favorite, “Power.” After what I deemed an interesting conversation,
I concluded that these babies knew their “Power's,” pretty well; however, they
had left one out. In my, I gottcha voice
I said, “what about Batman, you guys forgot Batman, they hurriedly began to
site Batman’s attributes. After they had
exhausted what I thought they knew about Batman, I noticed that they did not
mention that Batman could fly, so I gleefully blurted out, “You guys forgot
that Batman can fly.” My gleeful self-righteousness
would quickly be erased (see conversation below):
Me: You guys forgot that
Batman can fly.
Four year old: Batman can't
fly.
Me: Yes he can, he's a bat
with wings and bats can fly.
Four year old and three year old in
unison: Batman can't fly.
Me: Wait, what? Confused look
while glaring into the rear view mirror at their excited faces
I
paused the conversation to gather my wits, because these kids had just thrown
me for a loop and it seemed to me that they knew what they were talking about.
Of course, I did not want to be the author of confusion, nor did I want to
admit that a three and four year old knew more about Batman than I did, so I
decided to ask Siri if Batman could fly.
Me: Siri can Batman fly?
Siri: Batman cannot fly,
although he has a cape that.........
Me: Click....the sound of me
shutting down Siri out of embarrassment.
How on earth did I not know that
Batman couldn’t fly! As reruns of Batman movies and cartoons flashed through
my mind, I had no other choice then to conclude that a three and four year old
had just taught me something that I had assumed was an attribute of Batman
simply because he called himself Batman. My minds movie reruns gave me a
brief exit from the condescending giggles and agreements among toddlers. Suddenly from the back seat, a new question
arose:
Four year old: MaLissie, who
is your favorite power?
Me: Hummm, I would say Jesus.
Four year old: Jesus?
Me:
Yes Jesus. (guess he had never
heard of this superhero)
Four year old: Do Jesus have powers?
Three year old: Yes Jesus has
powers!
Me: Yes he does baby, and do
you know what His powers are?
Three year old: He can fly.
Me: Why yes babies, Jesus can
fly.
The way this conversation transitioned
from my grandkids schooling me on, “Powers,” to affording me an opportunity to
share attributes of my favorite Power was priceless. In the spirit of my two wise, inquisitive grandbabies,
I have a question for you; do you have a favorite Power?
If Jesus is your favorite Power,
are there any Attributes of Jesus that you did not know He had? Let me name
a few to refresh our memory:
He is Eternal, Alpha
& Omega, Unchangeable, Full of Wisdom, All Powerful, All Knowing, Ever
Present, A Healer, Provider, A Comforter, King of Kings, Lily in the Valley,
Bright and Morning Star, Savior, Wonderful Counselor, Creator, Sustainer, Lord
of Lords, Friend, Chief Shepherd, Living Bread, Hope, Lamb of God, Light of the
World, Prince of Peace, the Living Word and much, much more! Amen!
Unlike the fictional superhero’s we
see on TV and in movies, Jesus’ Powers are not fictional, they are real and He
uses them every day to protect us from others and ourselves. Yes, Jesus is my favorite Power; I hope He’s
yours too!
Much Love
Melissa
